AQ tries to hijack Pakistani warship to attack US Navy

Military.com ran a disturbing report illustrating the Pakistani military’s penetration by Al Qaeda militants.  Pakistan foiled an effort by four Pakistani Navy officers to take over a Pakistani frigate, rendezvous with more militants at sea and link up with an international flotilla.  Once there they would get as close as possible to a US Navy warship and attack it with the frigate’s substantial weapon systems.

The plot was discovered when an alert gunner noticed an inflatable boat carrying militants disguised as Pakistani marines carrying AK47s which are not normal to Pakistan’s marines.  The gunner fired a warning shot and the militants panicked engaging the ship with small arms and rocket fire.  The gunner armed with a minigun destroyed the inflatable boat and militants.  Alerted by the fire, security forces rushed to the frigate where the four Pakistani Navy officers engaged in an hours long firefight ending when the last surviving officer blew himself up.
