Article by Thomas Hegghammerin FP.com states the over 5000 Sunni foreign fighters in Syria today are more than any amount of foreign Muslim fighters in one nation in the last four decades to include Current/past Afghanistan and Iraq.  Causes are the ease in getting there, the intensity of Sunni resistance to Shite power and the historical importance of Syria to Muslims.
