AP reported that Russia has stated it will no longer attend consulting meetings of the 1990 Conventional Forces in Europe treaty. The treaty limited the amount of conventional military equipment NATO and Russia could maintain in Europe as the Cold War ended. Russia initially suspended its participation in 2007 because NATO would not ratify an update to the treaty taking into account the enlargement of NATO. NATO refused to ratify the new treaty until Russia pulled troops from Moldava and Georgia.
The recent events in Ukraine no doubt also weighed into Russia’s decision. The immediate impact will be negligible as bot side have not been complying with the treaty for years but it is a solid example of increased tension between Russia and the West.
