Days ago the President stated he was waiting for an Iraq strategy from the Pentagon. Dutifully the Washington Post does a piece titled “In White House’s Iraq debate, military brass pushed for doing less”. Problem is that’s less than half of the story.
The money quote, “Their (the military) shift reflects the paucity of good options and a reluctance to suffer more combat deaths in a war in which America’s political leaders are far from committed” If you were the military would you press this administration to take committed military action? Remember Syria’s “Red Line”? What about rehashing storing military vehicles to counter the Russians six months after the first time you mentioned it?
Have no doubt. There are military options available to defeat ISIS. The problem is before putting them in action the administration must make the case for the absolute need for that type of action and take concrete action in convincing Iraq’s government it must embrace the Sunnis and Kurds to attain success.
The breaking up of Iraq into three nations will just set in concrete multiple future areas of conflict among more and newly created countries as well as does nothing to defeat ISIS.
