ABC News reported today that a Marine is going on trial for desertion among other charges. Cpl. Wassef Hassoun maintains he was kidnapped by insurgents in 2004. The Lebanese born Marine had his release negotiated by the Hassoun clan of Lebanon where he tuned up at the US Embassy.
Houssoun was returned to Camp Lejune for further questioning where it was determined he deserted and had faked his kidnapping. He fled in 2005 and didn’t turn himself in until last year
If convicted of all charges, including two instances of desertion, losing an M9 pistol, false statements etc., Hassoun could be sentenced to 27 years.
