Army Times reports a study linking anti nerve-agent pills issued to troops during Desert Storm and individuals’ genetic ability to metabolize the pills (pyridostigmine bromide, or PB). Vets with the gene that complicates metabolizing the nerve-agent pills were up to 40 times more likely to have Gulf War illness symptoms.
I remember being issued PB pills. They made me feel nauseous and fidgety. Our unit was short so they were only issued to key personnel (officers and key NCOs). That deeply bothered one of my NCO’s who voiced his feelings of unfairness and increased susceptibility in formation. I gave my pills to SFC Smalls on the spot. I hope it turned out alright for him.
