Defense News reported Tuesday that the US is sending substantial equipment to Iraq some at no charge to the Iraqi government.  Donated equipment at no cost to the Iraqi government includes 250 MRAPs and 12,000 sets of body armor.  Iraq requested a resupply of M1A1 Abrams tanks which was approved.  The sale will include 170 M1A1-SA Abrams tanks.

Strategypage.com describes these tanks as “newly built tanks, largely equipped to the “SA” (Situational Awareness”) standard the U.S. Army developed in 2006. The M1A1-SA includes the latest thermal (FLIR, or heat sensing) sights”.

The Iraqi M1s lack depleted uranium armor, ERA (Explosive Reactive Armor), and most importantly well trained crews.  Iraq lost a third of its 140 Abrams to ISIS.  Many of these have been destroyed in US airstrikes.
