As part of Army budget cuts (before the sequester) plans  two dozen units for a total of 2,600 soldiers were removed from jump status.  12 units came from the 18th Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne from Fort Bragg, N.C., and F Company (Pathfinder), 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell, Ky.  This is part of the Army’s efforts to reach a mandated maximum number of 49,000 paratrooper slots.  The 49k cap is part of the 2012 Defense Strategic Guidance which details military forces through 2020.  The same plan reiterates the nation’s change from the half century doctrine of maintaining forces to wage two and a half to one and a half wars.  Here is the Congressional Research Service assessment.
